FAQ — Lumé LED Light Therapy Mask
Frequently asked questions

Answered honestly.

Real questions from people considering Lumé. We answer them straight, including the ones where the honest answer isn't the most flattering.

Results and timelines
Most people notice improvements in skin texture and radiance within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use. More noticeable changes in tone and firmness tend to develop over 8 to 12 weeks. Skin biology moves gradually, and LED therapy works with that process rather than against it. We set this timeline clearly on every page because we think you deserve accurate expectations before you buy, not after.
Consistency matters more than frequency. Three solid sessions per week over two months will outperform sporadic daily use every time.
With consistent use, most people see visible improvements in skin radiance, texture and tone. Some people also notice improvements in the appearance of fine lines and skin firmness over longer periods. Results vary significantly between individuals depending on skin type, baseline condition, age and consistency of use. We do not promise specific outcomes because the evidence does not support making specific claims for any individual user.
LED therapy has been studied across a range of skin types and tones. The wavelengths Lumé uses do not target melanin, so they are generally considered suitable for a wide range of skin tones. That said, some skin conditions mean LED is not appropriate. If you have melasma, highly reactive rosacea, photosensitivity, or are on photosensitising medications, please consult a dermatologist before using any LED device. See our full suitability guidance.
LED therapy does not work equally well for everyone. If you have followed a consistent routine for 8 or more weeks and have not noticed any change, it is worth reviewing whether any contraindications apply to your skin, whether your routine has been consistent enough, and whether LED is the right tool for your specific skin concern. We offer a 30-day returns window. If you are genuinely unsatisfied, contact us and we will work with you honestly.
We would rather give you a refund than have you keep a device that is not working for you.
Safety and suitability
Yes, when used as directed. LED therapy is non-invasive and does not use UV light. All LED components in the Lumé mask have been independently tested under IEC 62471, the international photobiological safety standard for lamps and light sources. Every wavelength achieved Exempt Group classification, the safest possible rating. Full test reports are published on our Lumé Verified page.
Yes, when used correctly. Lumé uses calibrated brightness with adjustable intensity settings and eye-considerate LED placement to reduce glare. Do not stare directly into the LEDs during use. If you have a history of eye conditions, photosensitivity, or are taking medications that affect light sensitivity, consult an optometrist or doctor before use. An optional eye cover is included with the mask.
It depends on the type. Some people with mild, stable rosacea use LED therapy without issue, and red and yellow wavelengths have been studied for their potential to reduce redness and skin tone unevenness. However, highly reactive or flare-prone rosacea can be worsened by light therapy in some individuals. We strongly recommend consulting a dermatologist before using any LED device if your rosacea is reactive or poorly controlled. We would rather you seek professional advice than risk a flare.
We advise against it without professional guidance first. Melasma is sensitive to a range of triggers, and the evidence on LED therapy for melasma is mixed. Some studies suggest certain wavelengths may exacerbate hyperpigmentation in some individuals. Please speak to a dermatologist who knows your specific case before using Lumé or any LED device.
We mention this on every page because we think it matters. We would rather lose a sale than worsen your skin.
There is no specific evidence suggesting LED therapy at consumer device intensities is harmful during pregnancy, but there is also limited research specifically on pregnant populations. As a precaution, we recommend consulting your midwife or GP before using any LED device during pregnancy. This is standard guidance across the category.
Not without medical advice first. Certain medications, including some antibiotics, retinoids, antifungals and diuretics, increase the skin's sensitivity to light and can cause reactions even at low intensities. Check with your prescribing doctor or pharmacist before using any light therapy device while taking these medications.
No. Lumé is a cosmetic device. We contacted the MHRA directly before launch to confirm our regulatory position. Their written response confirmed that products marketed only for cosmetic use without medical claims do not fall under the UK Medical Devices Regulations (Reference: CEC 254471). All our claims are cosmetic, describing the appearance of skin rather than physiological outcomes or medical treatments.
Using the mask
Start with clean, dry skin. Put on the mask, adjust the straps for a comfortable fit, and select your preferred wavelength mode. A session is 10 minutes. After treatment, apply your serums and moisturiser as normal. Use 3 to 5 times per week. Full instructions are included in the box, and a usage guide is available on the product page.
We recommend 3 to 5 sessions per week, 10 minutes each. This is the frequency supported by the research into home-use LED devices. Daily use is not harmful, but it is not meaningfully more effective than consistent use at the recommended frequency. Building a sustainable routine matters more than maximising sessions.
No. Lumé is designed for upright use. One of the most common complaints about premium LED masks is that they can only be worn lying flat due to weight and rigidity. The Lumé mask is lightweight and face-conforming, so you can use it sitting upright, reading, or watching TV. The adjustable straps keep it securely in place during normal relaxed movement.
The mask has four wavelengths. Red (630nm) is the most studied wavelength for skin renewal and the appearance of improved tone and texture. Near-infrared (850nm) penetrates deeper and has been studied for skin recovery and radiance. Yellow (590nm) has been studied for skin tone balance and the appearance of redness, though the evidence is more limited than for red and NIR. Blue (460nm) is widely studied for its effect on acne-associated bacteria and clearer-looking skin. Full evidence summaries for each wavelength are on our Science page.
Before. Apply the mask on clean, dry skin with no serums or moisturiser. After your 10-minute session, follow with your normal skincare routine. Applying LED through a layer of product is not harmful, but clean skin allows for the most consistent light delivery.
Generally yes, though with care. Retinol and other actives can increase skin sensitivity, so we recommend starting with lower brightness settings if you are using prescription-strength retinoids. If you experience any irritation, reduce session frequency or pause use and consult your dermatologist. Do not apply actives to skin immediately before a session.
The mask charges via USB-C. A full charge supports multiple sessions. A USB-C cable is included in the box. If you experience any issues with charging or battery life within the warranty period, contact us and we will resolve it.
The science
For red and near-infrared light, yes. There is a meaningful body of peer-reviewed research supporting their potential effects on skin renewal processes and the appearance of tone and texture. For blue light, the bactericidal mechanism targeting acne-associated bacteria is well documented. Yellow light has a more limited evidence base but promising early research. We rate all of this honestly on our Science page, including where the evidence is strong, moderate or limited.
The same type of light, at lower power output. Clinical LED devices operate at higher intensities under professional supervision, which may produce stronger results per session. Home devices like Lumé deliver consistent, repeated exposure at lower intensity, which research suggests can be comparably effective over a longer time horizon. Regular home use can replace the inconsistency of occasional clinic visits for most people.
Every LED component in the Lumé mask has been independently tested by accredited third-party laboratories. Photobiological safety testing under IEC 62471 confirmed Exempt Group classification for all tested wavelengths. Electrical safety, EMC compliance and RoHS materials testing have all been completed and passed. The full unedited reports are published on our Lumé Verified page. Not summaries. The actual documents.
Because early research is promising, and because we are honest about that distinction. Yellow light has been studied for skin tone balance and the appearance of redness, with some small clinical studies showing positive signals. The evidence is not as strong or replicated as for red light. We include it because it adds potential benefit without any known risk, but we note the evidence limitation clearly rather than overstating its efficacy.
Buying and returns
The Lumé LED Face Mask is £148. In the box: the mask, controller unit, USB-C charging cable, quick-start guide and a results tracker. Free UK delivery is included. That price reflects the actual cost of the technology, not a luxury premium. Comparable premium masks sell for £250 to £500 using the same wavelengths.
18 months from the date of purchase, covering manufacturing defects and component failures under normal use conditions. We chose 18 months specifically because most skin improvement from LED therapy becomes visible over 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use. A 12-month warranty that expires before you have properly assessed the device is not adequate. Physical damage from misuse is not covered.
30 days from the date of delivery for unused or lightly used masks. We set the window at 30 days rather than 14 because visible skin results take time to appear, and we want you to have an opportunity to start a routine before making a final decision. If you have a problem, contact us directly and we will deal with it honestly.
At launch, Lumé ships within the UK only. International shipping is being considered for a future phase. If you are outside the UK and interested in Lumé, feel free to get in touch via our contact page and we will let you know when international delivery becomes available.
The Lumé mask is manufactured in China. The brand was founded and is based in the UK, and all product development, compliance work and brand direction is done here. We are transparent about the manufacturing location because we think you should know. It is also consistent with every major LED mask brand operating in this category, including those priced at three times our price.
